We started offering arts opportunities in the Eastmorland neighborhood and it’s been so much fun!
On a beautiful sunny day in September, in honor of the fall equinox, we completed a set of sun and moon themed murals. They highlight the community center entrance closest to the art studio, facing Ogden St. This was a free community event, and 30 neighbors stopped by to help out. Thank you to all who joined, it was a delight to make this together. Huge thank you to mural artist Amy Zaremba for her moon scene design and for sharing her time and skills! Follow her @zaremba_art!
On October 4th, we had our first No School Day Art Play session. The kids were totally engaged and flexing their creative muscles for two straight hours as they constructed their own little houses out of clay, sticks, cardboard, and whatever they were inspired to use! Here’s some feedback:
“Thanks again for the great art class today. As we were leaving, Abe said “I was a little shy at first, but then it was fun! Maybe we could come again someday? Walt had a great time, too, and was very proud of his creation.”
“Thank you for such a fun afternoon! Ruby had a blast! She was nervous about going at first but when I picked her up first thing she said was she was so happy she went she had so much fun.”
On another gorgeous fall day, we set up a collaborative weaving project in the park at the Lansing St. Food Forest for the Eastmorland Market. Kids stopped by to add colors and patterns of their choice, and the completed weaving now hangs in the studio!
Play and process experiences allow kids (or the kids inside all of us) freedom to follow curiosities by making individual choices about materials and how they should be used. Opportunities to collaborate deepen our relationships and sense of community.
We focus on these types of art experiences because:
When we trust our own ideas, we build confidence.
When we make our own choices, we build agency.
When we play, we nurture creative thinking.
When we work together, we grow belonging.
